| Baptist High School Expels Gay Student |

There is a dramatic development to report tonight in the case of Jose Garcia
– a 19 year old student at the Baptist School of Adult and Continuing
Education in Belmopan. We should say former student because Garcia says that
on Friday he received a letter from school principal Norman Willacey –
asking him to withdraw from the school and to seek counselling. We couldn’t
reach Willacey for comment.
PR Officer for the Ministry of Education Arlette Gomez who’s been monitoring
the situation says she is still trying to verify if he was indeed expelled.
She promised to tell us more tomorrow. Garcia as you know by now- dresses effeminately
and has admitted that he used the female bathroom at school. He had agreed to
stop doing that and also committed to change his mode of dress. He told last
month that he feels comfortable dressing as a girl.
Jose told us today that he would seeking a meeting with the school principal
this evening. He has one more year to go in the three year program to earn a
general education diploma.
Education Minister Patrick Faber told us last week that there may be little
the Ministry of Education can do to keep Jose Garcia in school since the Baptist
High School in Belmopan is privately run and receives limited government aid. |
