Fri, November 6, 2009

33 year old Delroy Chaplin burglarized the same Chinese shop twice in two days and today he was sentenced to 22 years in jail for it. Police alleged that at 7:30 am on July 28th of 2008 – an armed Chaplin entered Jenny’s Shop on Meighan Avenue and stole $2,785 in cash and some phone cards. Chaplin wasn’t caught then and so he tried his luck again at Jenny’s Shop two days later on July 30th. This time he was armed with a loaded .25 pistol and stole $366.50 in cash and some phone cards. But on that occasion he was busted and charged with 2 counts of aggravated burglary, 2 counts of aggravated assault, one count of keeping firearm without a license and one count of keeping ammunition without a gun license.

Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie found Chaplin guilty of all six charges and sentenced him to 7 years for each count of aggravated burglary, 2 years for each count of aggravated assault and two years each for the possession of firearm and ammunition charges. That adds up to 22 years but Chaplin will only 13 because some of the sentences will run concurrently.

In his defense, Chaplin testified that he was sick on the day the first incident was alleged to have occurred and that two days later on the second occasion – he was beaten by police.
