Herman Only Helping; Not Running Red On Immigration Rules
Thu, January 19, 2012
Another UDP politician whose office has been as busy as immigration or election and boundaries is Herman Longsworth. He's the UDP hopeful in the Albert Division - and yesterday it caused quite a furor when word went out that immigrants were flooding his office - which is also his home on Amara Avenue.

The way the story went out there, you might have thought Longsworth was giving out passports! But, he wasn't - in fact one man we spoke to yesterday was ticked off, he told us in Spanish - and off camera - that he felt he had been set up:..

Immigrant
"They promised us our nationality to vote for them, but they don't show themselves so we could converse with them or talk to them, and that's a big problem because if they want us to vote for them we need to speak with them."

"We only need to pay $25 for our police record. That's all."

Reporter
"Are you going to get your police record in one day?"

Immigrant
"We get in a short while. 20 minute to half an hour the most."

And so, today we went back to Longsworth's office - slash - home where we again found a swarm of hopeful immigrants - queuing up. Fact is, most of these folks we spoke to have been in Belize for years, and are using the election rush to try and get their papers pushed through.

But, it seems that in Herman Longsworth they have come to the wrong man; he says he won't pay for their papers, and he can't get it pushed through - he can only help:..

Herman Longsworth
"Basically what happened, we had about 5 people who approach me as the UDP Standard Bearer for Albert because they wanted assistance. They heard about what was happening, and they wanted assistance. I inquired into whether they actually qualified, and they qualify, and so I told them to come over to the office and we would assist them with filling out the forms and getting everything together so when it is taken to Belmopan it is not rejected."

"I have no idea how the word got out, and we were swamped; we had hundreds of people out here and I had to be turning back people."

Jules Vasquez
"So what do they want?"

Herman Longsworth
"They want assistance with getting nationality."

Jules Vasquez
"And in exchange you will?"

Herman Longsworth
"In exchange for nothing."

Jules Vasquez
"Will you register them?"

Herman Longsworth
"Of course if they are resident in Albert and they become Belizeans why would I not want to register them? I am a politician in Albert. I need this to be clear; I am only assisting with the processing of applications for people who currently reside in Albert. If they don't reside in Albert I send them away."

Jules Vasquez
"So you are not putting them in safe houses?"

Herman Longsworth
"I am not putting anybody in any safe house. I am only dealing with people who reside in Albert, and you can ask anyone out here. I was just telling some people why are they still out here when I already told them that I can't help them. They have the press coming to my house now thinking that I am doing things that I am not doing."

Jules Vasquez
"The impression is that you are their sponsor and that you want them on your list as voters. `That's how it's been working for Elvin Penner for example."

Herman Longsworth
"I am not Elvin Penner. I am Herman Longsworth, please. What we have been doing - and let's be clear about what we have been doing - is we have been assisting people with filling out all the relevant forms. We have been ensuring that they have the supporting documentation and they have them right, so that when the thing goes to Belmopan it doesn't waste people's time and their time."

Jules Vasquez
"So after this you have to rush to register them."

Herman Longsworth
"There is no rush Jules. The cutoff date for registration is tomorrow. This is about nationality, it's not about registration."

Jules Vasquez
"But then you want them to vote for you."

Herman Longsworth
"Of course I would love to have them vote for me, but you forget that I am not only here to get votes. I am a sworn servant for the people of Albert, and I will continue to assist people in Albert regardless of whether they can get on the voters list before any cut-off date for voting. I am here for the long haul."

Jules Vasquez
"So if you are able to help these people today, will you then try and move to register them before the close of business tomorrow?"

Herman Longsworth
"No, I can't do that. The process doesn't allow for that. So I will continue to help these people regardless of whether they meet the deadline for registration."

Jules Vasquez
"So now the suggestion is that when you see all these immigrants at your office that something suspicious is happening here; you are fast tracking them?"

Herman Longsworth
"That is the perception because of what people have been pushing. I won't get in to the reason for people saying what they've been saying but I will tell you that all we are doing is facilitating the process for people who reside in Albert."

Jules Vasquez
"Yesterday I know this woman told me that Minister Montero is paying everything for her and her dependents, and Elvin Penner told me that he is paying half for everyone. Are you paying for these people the $300 for them to become Belizean?"

Herman Longsworth
"Jules I am paying nothing. In fact on principle I work. I believe that if you as a person that comes from another country want so much to become a Belizean that it should be on you. You should feel proud to be able to find what it takes to become a Belizean. I will facilitate the process for you, but I won't pay for your nationality. That is your responsibility."

Jules Vasquez
"But you know there are a lot of political operatives at the office in Belmopan working night and day - literally."

Herman Longsworth
"I have never been there Jules, I don't know. We started this process a couple days ago because people came to me and say 'Mr. Longsworth, please help me, I want to get my nationality.'"

Jules Vasquez
"There are thousands of people in the woodwork who have been living in Belize for a long time."

Herman Longsworth
"It's quite alarming yes. I had no idea, I was surprised. We have people who have come here who have been in Belize for 20 years, have grown children, and had not even thought about getting their nationality, and they qualify."

At the end of the day, Longsworth told us that his office continued to help people put their files together until the close of business this evening.
