And The PUP’s Candidate For Albert Is…
Thu, July 24, 2014
For months, there has been speculation about who will run for the PUP in the Albert division. There was supposed to have been a convention in May, and at the time three candidates submitted their name. But, the party brass asked them to stand down to make way for a candidate with a higher profile. Speculation was rampant that it would be Dickie Bradley, a former PUP candidate in Queen's Square.

Well, tonight, we can confirm that it isn't Bradley. The likely PUP Standard Bearer for Albert is Paul Thompson, well known as the president of the Belize Basketball Federation. Thompson - who worked as Mark Espat's political officer in the Albert between 1996 and 2006 - confirmed today that he has put in his name as a candidate for Albert. We say he is the "likely" standard bearer because it is not clear if he will face a convention challenge. But, political insiders suggest that since the party brass directly courted his candidacy - they are expected to clear the way for him to be endorsed as a candidate who would not have to face a convention challenge.

Thompson is well known in the ALBERT area where he was the political point-man for two of the three Mark Espat terms - where in 2003 Espat won with a still unmatched 83% of the vote.

Thompson is currently a member of the Board for BIL, or Belize Infrastructure Limited where he was appointed by Prime Minister Dean Barrow by virtue of his presidency of the Basketball Federation.
