More Kids Learning Money Literacy
Wed, July 22, 2015

Another series of summer camps has concluded today. As we reported last week Wednesday, kids were learning all about budgeting and saving at the Financial Literacy Summer Camp. Well, the scholarship section of that initiative concluded today and a short ceremony was held to honour the students who participated. Today at the ITVET we spoke with 3 of the students and they told us how rewarding this experience at the camp has been.

Arin Riley - Manager, Corporate Programs for Peace Work

"This track we have at ITVET is the special part of an initiative called project Belize. This programme in particular at ITVET is the scholarship track. So it's made up of students from the youth leadership council and we have them divided into two programmes. The have the financial literacy and entrepreneurship track and well as the high school innovation track. This morning we heard from 7 high school innovation challenge teams and they presented on a case study that covered youth unemployment in Belize. So we were able to sit through all of their presentations this morning and hear their ideas and we also have our financial and literacy entrepreneurship track that is covering job skills, resume skills, interview skills as we as budgeting, savings and the regular financial literacy entrepreneurship curriculum."

Angie Robateau - Coordinator

"Today we saw were these kids are bright. In 3 days they came up with 7 different solutions for unemployment within Belize - that I think could be their achievable ideas."

Jemuel White - Summer Camp Student

"It was a really good camp because during those 3 days you get to learn a lot and those things can be very valuable to you. And one thing I learned that confidence is almost key to everything because once you have a positive attitude and avoid all the negative, you can get through anything. You can start your day right, you can get through your challenges, you can overcome anything."

Courtney Weatherburne

"What would be one thing or one lessons that you could take away from this entire experience?"

Marqueem McKay - Summer Camp student

"Public speaking making everything a better life. Because if you don't have public speaking you can't really speak out in to what you want to believe in and what you want to do."

Courtney Weatherburne

"So tell us more about the experience, how was the summer camp? Especially the financial literacy aspect of it."

Marqueem McKay - Summer Camp student

"It was an amazing camp, I got to learn a lot about savings and what you should do with a bank and everything you want to put your life into you have to have a savings so you could look forward and finance that."

Maria Gabriel - Summer Camp student

"It is my first time and it has been a very amazing time spending. Also being with the mentor I met, Julian Griffin, she has been a very good mentor. She has taught me things that I would know about but wasn't confident in them."

Courtney Weatherburne

"Sort of things like what?"

Maria Gabriel - Summer Camp student

"Certain things like - well, when I have ideas I don't really express them but when she was asking me - I was telling her about them and she's like: Yeah you can do it Maria. So she's building confidence in me and letting me understand that if I don't believe in myself, no one else would, so I have to start with myself, so that I could do better."

There over 40 high school students who participated in this scholarship track and it ran for 3 days.
