Wed, September 28, 2016

This week Belize is hosting the 4th Caribbean Youth Leaders’ Summit. Over 100 delegates from 20 different countries throughout the Caribbean, Costa Rica and Namibia have gathered in Belize to attend workshops that will better prepare them to guide the region. We spoke to Tijani Christian, the chairman of the summit, about this year’s theme.

Tijani Christian - Chair, 4th Carib, Youth Leader's Summit
"So the theme for this year is agenda 2030 from rhetoric to action. It's looking at moving beyond just talk shops as we like to call them and look at how we would really do action to implement the SDG. We had a lot of dialogue, we had a lot of consultation, we are saying as young people now we've done a lot of talk, we've done a lot of consultations how can we now move to the next step which to implement. And so through this summit it's really around capacity building of our youth leaders because at the same time if you want someone to really do something you have to train them, you have to equip them with the skills to do so. So this youth summit is training our youth leader to the skills necessary for the implementation of the SDG. At the end of the day what we'll be doing is a collaborative effort across all the regional networks and groups to ensure that we implement strategically because the best way is to work wise."

Agenda 2030 is a UN initiative aimed at sustainable development by aiming to end poverty and inequality as well as to make serious strides in preventing climate change by 2030.
