OAS SG Saw The Encroachments
Fri, March 17, 2017
But international law has no relevance along the Belize Guatemala western border. Right there, its more like the law of the jungle where Guatemalans are constantly pushing into Belizean territory. They illegally enter Belize's protected areas to look for arable land on which to farm, and to illegally pan for gold, and illegally extract timber, Xate and Scarlet Macaws. It's an ugly cycle of desperation and resource depletion, and Almagro got a fair sense of it when he took an overflight above the western border line yesterday:

H.E. Luis Almagro, OAS Secretary General
"Yesterday we made an overfly in the adjacency zone, administered by Belize, Caracol and the Chiquibul national park. It was a very important overfly. We were not able to land because if climate reasons, but we were able to see it and appreciate the different realities that exist on one side and the other."

H.E. Pat Andrews, Belize Ambassador to OAS
"The Secretary General, he was very saddened about what he saw, but it's the reality. We wanted him to see that."
