Tonight, we can confirm that a Guatemalan civilian did die in the Chiquibul - but it was an accident and had nothing to do with the BDF or law enforcement, according to General David Jones. 18 year old Marvin Cristobal Chac Pop’s body was removed form the Chiquibul this afternoon and is now being held at a morgue in Belize. Two Belizean forensic Doctors, Ken and Blanco were taken to the Ciebo Chico area of the Chiquibul today where they determined that Pop had tumbled down from a cliff and died from injuries to his head when he fell on the stones in a small creek. This happened 7.7 kilometers or 4.7 miles inside Belize.

And while that is the official version from General Jones, the Guatemalan media has a very different spin on the story. A report from Canal Antigua claims that Chac-Pop died at the hands of the BDF. They concede that he and three other Guatemalans were in Belize to try and illegally pan for gold, and that they did slip and Chac-Pop hit his head, and that Chac-Pop lost consciousness. But then, his three friends told Canal Antigua that they had to leave him there because the BDF was approaching. They claim that when they got back the BDF had hanged him.

Today General Jones stressed that his death had nothing to do with the BDF, and added that he was definitely not shot. And he underscored that contrary to what the Guatemalan media reported yesterday, the person killed was not a Guat soldier.

So, for sure we can tell you that the Guatemalan media definitely got major facts wrong on this one - when they jumped out and reported that a Guatemalan soldier had been killed. That even prompted Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales to of on Guatemalan TV to say that, quote, “the report that a Guatemalan solider was killed is completely false.â€￾ He also addressed the murder of Eduardo Samuel Caal on the Coastal Road and stressed that it did not happen in the Adjacency Zone.
