Tsunami Scare Was The Ultimate Disaster Preparedness Drill
Thu, January 11, 2018
On Tuesday night - probably for the first time - Belizeans came to terms with the possibility that a tsunami could suddenly spring out of the Caribbean sea and sweep through coastal communities, doing as much or more damage than a hurricane. But, it would all happen with maybe an hour's notice…and that's a chilling possibility for the Belize City Council in the country's largest municipality.

Today the mayor spoke about the instantaneity - and the need to come up with a response mechanism that works as quickly as those waves roll in from afar:...

Darrell Bradley - Mayor, Belize City Council
"A tsunami, which is something that can destroy an entire city, within a matter of seconds and can creep up on you with only an hour, an hour and a half lead time. That's something that we need to plan for, and I think that from an operational stand point, we're looking at that. How can we get systems in place where we can advise people of a threat in the night time, when most people are sleeping, or when most services are closed down. One of the things I am very grateful for is the media outlets."
