PUP Says It Will Work On A Solution
posted (January 5, 2018)
And when it comes back for a vote - what will the PUP do? That's what we asked the Leader of the Opposition today - but he was more eager to talk about the Prime Minister's 32 minute legal presentation to the House:..

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"What is the position of the PUP? We now wait for the next house meeting when it will actually be debated. Have you all taken a unitary position? Or is it like the UDP when they say you can have a vote of conscience?"

Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition
"Well I think that what's more important to point out today that the Prime Minister once again continues to do his legal dance. Every time he comes to the house and he makes this grand legal explanation that he got advise from legal luminaries, but whenever he goes to court he loses and now once again he is coming that he has gotten all these advises to point out that he may not have to pay."

"What is of concern now means that there is going to be another round of legal wrangling about the constitution and whether parliament is supreme and so forth and obviously more UDP lawyers are going to be benefitting to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees."

"I think that the Belizean people wants Barrow to take responsibility for this fiasco and that the Belizean people need to stop the Prime Minister from taking us for fools. Because that is what he has been doing since 2008. Every fight he takes on he loses."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Your party will now have time to review the legislation and reflect on it. What's next for the PUP on this matter?"

Hon. John Briceno
"We are waiting for the bill. I finally got a copy of the bill. We are going to study the bill and we are going to continue the discussion as to a way forward. One thing I can tell you is that we are not going to be obstructing this. We are going to find a way where we can come with some ideas and recommendations to the Prime Minister in an effort to find a settlement that can be to the benefit of the Belizean people."
