Commission of Inquiry Coming
posted (January 8, 2018)
Prime Minister Barrow is going ahead with a Commission of Inquiry into the Universal Health Services affair.

On Friday, he told the press he is waiting on feedback from the National Trade Union Congress of Belize to appoint the Commission:

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"I'm waiting on the NTUCB. Remember that this was confirmed, it was something as I said we had been thinking about but it was confirmed at the meeting I had with them. They are to get back to me on the draft in terms of reference."

Reporter
"What are you hoping is discovered that they might not already know about the matter?"

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"So many things, because there is so little we know. The headline questions of secrecy, deliberate concealment, what the rate of interest was, that's fine. But how it is that the Taiwan money was paid, how it is that the Venezuela money, which was eventually clawed back, was paid. How comes when that happened, there appeared to have been a point at which the debt was cleared off. I'm not certain whether they are after the government put itself back on the hook because it wishes to provide working capital. That's the sort of thing that I think Belizeans want to know and then ultimately how in the name of creation can it be that at the end of the day, the government has nothing to show."
