PM Hopes US Will Not Cut Support to Belize
posted (January 8, 2018)
And, Prime Minister Barrow also discussed the recent UN resolution calling for the United States to drop its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Despite very clear threats that US Financial aid would be cut, Belize voted with 127 other nations against the US.

Now, the US Ambassador to the UN sent out letters to her fellow ambassadors saying, quote, "The President will be watching this vote carefully and has requested I report back on those countries who voted against us. We will take note of each and every vote on this issue."

On Friday, the Prime Minister says he doesn't expect the US to cutback on funding to Belize - since most of it is for internal security which also dovetails with US Security interests:

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"I think in terms of their contributions to be Belize, they are in the main, in relation to security. A matter in which they had almost as much as a vested interest as we do. So, I am hoping that that sort of thing won't suffer. Again I should add that we tried to make plain that for us it wasn't a matter of trying to tweak the tail of the elephant or anything of the sort. We weren't trying to play the bad man; it really was a vote rooted in the history of the resolutions at the UN. And in what we feel was that the correct position to adapt, we completely respect the U.S' determination to go otherwise. We had thought that it wouldn't be too much to ask them to respect ours."
