The Good Kind Of Hurricane
posted (January 18, 2018)

Tomorrow night the National Elite Basketball League will kick off its season right here in the city with the Belize Hurricanes one of two teams representing the city.

They had a tough season last year, but they says they have reloaded to properly represent the old capital.

We got to speak with a few team reps them today.

Ian Mariano - Hurricanes Basketball Public Relations
"What we do primarily is we represent Belize City. Ou goal is we keep ourselves socially conscious while bringing that pride and joy as far as restoring Belize as the Mecca of basketball in the country. We are letting everybody know that come tomorrow night we have our first inaugural match. It is the first game of the season as far as the Smart Belize Hurricanes are concerned and it one of those games that you don't want to miss. We have 12 games and from there we move over to the finals. We go to each district and we play. We take the best of what we got and we take the best of what we have representing this city."

Akeem Watters - Shooting Gaurd/Small Forward
"Well me personally I can't tell you how the other guys feel but me personally I am pumped up and excited as well but I am also humbled for the opportunity because you know a lot of things are going on. It is just blessed to see another season healthy and blessed."

Sahar Vasquez
"So you guys got to train a lot. What were some things you had to work on?"

Tyson Reynold - Center
"We had to work on of course just gelling and glueing at first. Of course, it takes time just like any other team. We had learned how the team runs. The weaknesses of each other. As we practice and as time goes by we learn to pass that all up and as soon as we gelled there is no one stopping us."

Sahar Vasquez
"In terms of the competition do you feel like it has gotten more challenging over time or how are you feeling about that?"

Glency Lopez - Point Gaurd
"Over the season it gets more challenging so in the workout, you have to put in more so it could pay off."

The game will be at the Belize Elementary School gym and it starts at 9 pm. The team will face off against the Cayo Verdes.

The season opens tonight in Belmopan with the hometown Bandits versus the San Pedro Tigersharks.
