The visitors center at the Lubantuun Maya Site in the Toledo District was burglarized
over the weekend and a thief or thieves stole two jade necklaces. It happened
sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, when access to the center
was gained by prying open the burglar bars and damaging the glass case where
the necklaces were kept.
According to Dr. Jaime Awe, the Director of the Institute of Archaeology, the
pieces are from Mayan antiquity but they are not among the prized pieces. That’s
because they are what’s called of provenance unknown, meaning that they
are not dated or have not been linked to any Mayan site or era.
