Crazy Mid-Afternoon Shooting in Downtown Belize City
posted (November 13, 2008)

At this time details are sketchy but 7NEWS understands that sometime after three this evening the sounds of gunshots erupted in the area of King Street, a young man was seen running away towards Albert Street and there are also reports of a police chase that ended inside Brodies Office on Regent Street. Additionally other reports are that there had been a hold-up at Brodies.

When 7NEWS arrived at the location at Belisle Alley off King Street to find out exactly what did happen, we did observe scenes of crime technicians in an alley bagging what appeared to be cartridges found on the ground. While police at the scene refused to talk to us, we understand that the string of stories may all result from the deadly scare that was given to a fifteen year old minor, whose life is reportedly being threatened. 7NEWS did manage to speak to an area resident and a witness who saw what happened later on Regent Street and when the police left the area with the young victim.

Maximiliano Garcia, Resident – King’s Street
“I was sleeping at that moment but I heard some gunshots by my door. So when I heard by my door bang bang bang I woke up and I opened the door and I saw a lot of policemen with gun and a lot of more guns. I came out and said I don’t know what’s going on out here. I came out and stood by the areas there. That is about it.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
So you don’t hear what happened?

Maximiliano Garcia,
“Well they always run through here because this is their escape. Once they run through here they can jump that fence over there and go through that side. They always jump over the fence, people with bikes and so.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
Did you see if the police took away anybody?

Maximiliano Garcia,
“No, no, I didn’t see anything like that.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
They didn’t find any gun through the alley?

Maximiliano Garcia,
“No, nothing like that. I didn’t see nothing like that. All I saw was a lot of policemen and guns. Someone knocked at my door and it was a policeman. He didn’t ask me anything and I didn’t tell him anything either.”

Anita Nembhard, Witness
“I was leaving the courtroom on the side street here and I saw two police officers coming from Brodies side on Albert Street. I saw them running so I decided to run to see what was happening. They came this side of Regent Street and headed towards Brodies. About three vehicles came out here and then I saw they bring a young man from upstairs. The young man seemed frightened and I saw police took him into custody.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
When you started asking people in the area what happened, what did they tell you?

Anita Nembhard,
“All they said was that somebody just ran upstairs in Brodie and police took him from upstairs but he didn’t go there to commit any crime. It seems like he was running from someone.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
What did he tell them?

Anita Nembhard,
“Upstairs I understand he told them, ‘help me help me, somebody is trying to kill me’ and that is when police came and took him outside.”

Late this evening reports to 7NEWS were that the Scenes of Crime technicians recovered a number of cartridges for a twelve gauge pump action shot gun but no weapon was found. According to reports, the police arrived on the scene after being alerted to the incident on King Street and at no time did their officers fire their weapons. The gunshots were reportedly fired by two young men who were chasing the minor.

According to a Brodies’ employee who was inside the office at the time when the fifteen year old minor ran into the building after the boy shouted that someone was trying to kill him, some of the employees ducked under their desks and others dashed to the back of the office.

Late this evening we understand that after being taken to the police station the minor was released. He claims that he does not know who was chasing him or why anyone wants him dead. But we understand this evening that incident comes on the heels of another that occurred sometime last week. In that incident, the same young boy after being chased ran into the Social Services Department on Regent Street shouting that someone was trying to kill him.
