Details are sketchy at this time but 7NEWS understands
that sometime on Wednesday a group of international divers made a gruesome discovery
several hundred feet inside the Blue Hole situated in the centre of the Lighthouse
Reef System. Unconfirmed reports are that the remains of what appeared to be
a man was found three hundred feet down and a camera was strapped around the
body. It is not known why the divers decided to leave the remains in deep within
the Blue Hole but they did resurface with the camera that was handed in to the
San Pedro Police.
When 7NEWS contacted the island’s authorities they told us that they
first need to verify that there is a body in the Blue Hole. But when they took
the camera to a local dive shop, the staff was able to use a serial number to
trace it back to an incident that occurred seven years ago in which a camera
was reported missing from a team that did a dive of the Blue Hole. According
to the police while they believe a missing person report had also been filed
at that time they have yet to confirm it,
But the talk on the island is that the remains discovered are believed to be
that of a U.S. national who was staying at a local hotel and went missing. The
case file has now been handed over to the head of the Eastern Division David
Henderson.
7NEWS understands that local authorities are still
trying to head out to the dive site to confirm the sighting to confirm if the
report is true by recovering the remains but there may be financial constraints
because the great depth would make it an expensive operation. We hope to have
more on this story on Friday’s newscast.
