Darwin Gray Never Made It Home from Melchor
posted (January 14, 2009)

23 year old Darwin Gray, a resident of Flamboyant Street in the Lake Independence Area and the father of a newborn is missing presumed drowned tonight. And it didn’t happen anywhere near his home; he allegedly slipped into the Mopan River near the Benque Viejo border. He was returning form Melchor to Belize through the back on Monday night when he fell into the river and did not re-surface.

Today his family went west to scour the river in search of his body but they found nothing. But apart form finding the body, the family also has to untangle the mystery of his drowning. It’s not like he was swimming; as we said he was returning from Melchor at night being led by a Spanish descent man which certainly hints at an unusual activity. But he wasn’t alone, he was with friends, who failed to make a report to police in Benque Viejo when he disappeared, which hints directly at the illicit.

Today his sister Stephanie Grey told us that he left home on Monday night with a friend.

Stephanie Grey, Sister of Missing Man
“I wasn’t here Monday. They said he left Monday night.”

Anita Nembhard,
“What did he say when he left on Monday night?”

Stephanie Grey,
“He said he is going to road. So many witnesses around here said my brother went with a young man who he claimed to be his friend. He said they were going to road so everyone heard them say they are going to road.”

Anita Nembhard,
“What have you all heard from the police in Benque and Belize City about your missing brother?”

Stephanie Grey,
“Well everybody the search for him but they haven’t found him. So we are waiting for three days, you know they say after three days a body will float up or something.

After he went missing the Spanish man came to my house and told my father and the rest of us that were inside that, he gave us a story that my brother, they were crossing the Mopan River and he was ahead and my brother was behind and when he looked to the back, he didn’t see my brother. That is the story he gave us at our house, that was about 5:30. The other story he give to Benque, they went to Benque yesterday which is Tuesday when they went to Benque, he gave a story and said he was walking in the water and then afterwards he looked behind and he saw my brother slipped and lift his head and then went down. That is the story he gave in Benque yesterday.

But what I am trying figure out is that they left and coming along the road they have so many police stations. Why didn’t they stop in Benque and give a report and said my brother went missing. Why did they wait until they reached Belize City to come to my other brother’s house who is a fire fighter and tell my brother that my brother went missing in Benque? I don’t them to pinpoint nobody because I don’t have information like that. We are waiting on the body. I don’t want to say it is foul play or I don’t want to say it is accident he got dead by.”

Police cannot make any conclusions until a post mortem is conducted and the search continue for Darwin Gray’s body.
