Landings 9 Book Launch
posted (January 14, 2009)

And while parking is the thing on Albert Street, Landings were being discussed on North Front Street at the Image Factory. That’s the travelling contemporary art exhibit that’s has gone through galleries from Taipei to Merida. After 9 events, it’s winding down – and the Landings 9 book was launched today. Co–curator Yasser Musa and organizer Joan Duran held a press conference to talk about it today.

Yasser Musa, Co-Curator
“We are here to launch the Landings 9 book which has 128 pages of full colour and it is a reflection of the end of a project, a visual arts project where artists from the Yucatan, Central America and the Caribbean have come together over the past four years to produce various exhibitions and along the way, after each exhibition, with the work and design of Joan Duran we’ve produced these great catalogues from one to nine.

All these three regions have one thing in common, that we do not put any emphasis on the record, we do not believe in publications. We do not believe in making a statement that this is what we have done. And so I think that is in a way the greatest accomplishment of this project, that we have a record that the next ten years down the road somebody can open it up and say look, around the first decade of the 21st century, this is what was going on in art.”

Joan Duran, Organizer
“We decided just to have a book, basically a visual book with photographs.

In terms of the publisher, it is Belizean. That is irrelevant, that’s nothing, that should not make us feel proud about it because as long as we keep thinking in terms of Belizean and Jamaican and Dominican Republic and from Haiti and from Panama and this and that, we will continue the way we are. If we look at ourselves and the region in a mirror, we are not in very good shape.

Everybody knows that Landing is a project. It came out from the small community of artists in Belize at the end of the Zero Project.”
