posted (February 9, 2009)

Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the new Mrs. Barrow, Kim Simplis got married on Saturday February 7th. at the Episcopal Church of St Paul the Apostle, in Savannah Georgia. About one hundred persons attended – most of them from Belize – and now thanks to these pictures which have been posted on the official photographer’s website everyone can see what the event looked like.

Activities were centered around the Marshall House – a hotel in downtown Savannah which dates back to the mid 19th century. That’s where the couple and their daughter Salima stayed as well as most of the guests who occupied many of the sixty five rooms. That’s also where the bridal preparations took place.

The best man was the Prime Minister’s brother Denys, and the Maid of Honour was Kim Barrow’s sister. Their daughter and her cousin were flower girls. The Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega was to have been in the groom’s party, but he had to stay behind to resolve the sugar industry crisis.

Other Ministers and party officials in attendance were UDP Second Deputy Erwin Contreras, Heads of the regional caucuses. John Saldivar, Patrick Faber, and Eden Martinez and Works Minister Anthony Boots Martinez, considered the PM’s closest Cabinet ally. The party Chairman, Douglas Singh and Secretary General Phillipa Bailey were there as well. Taiwanese Ambassador Joseph Shih also attended.

The church service started at 3:00 on a chilly Saturday afternoon and was presided over by Belize’s Anglican Bishop, Phillip Wright. The reception followed at the Marshall House. After speeches by the bride and the groom’s parties the couple’s first dance was to Etta James’ “At Last.”

The Prime Minister and Mrs. Barrow returned to the country this afternoon. He is the first Belizean Prime Minister to have gotten married during his term of office – and he did so on the first anniversary of the UDP’s February 7th election victory.
