Former British High Commissioner to Belize John Yapp left Belize under the
suggestion of scandal, but now he has been exonerated. No one could say for
sure why the career diplomat was suddenly sent home from his post in Belize,
but in July of last year, the British newspaper, The Mail, on Sunday reported
that it was because he had behaved inappropriately at a social event at which
several high profile Belizean women were in attendance.
Well, now The Mail says it got it wrong. The paper reports that that an official
inquiry has cleared Yapp of the allegations. The paper has paid him damages
and legal costs. And though the allegations had it that Yapp had behaved inappropriately
towards the Prime Minister’s wife, Kim Barrow, the diplomat is known to
be a friend of the PM and his wife, and was a noted guest at his wedding.
