Mexican National Butchered in Douglas
posted (June 2, 2009)

And while that was the murder scene in Belize City, Orange Walk Police didn’t find out about a murder that happened last night until this morning. A Mexican national was brutally chopped to death with a machete near Douglas Village. The crime scene was the Santa Fe Ranch on the Douglas Road where Jose Enrique Sanabria was killed. The prime suspect is his co-worker who is at large tonight. Keith Swift has the story from Douglas Village.

Keith Swift Reporting,
It is inside this small farmhouse located 2 and a half miles in on the road to Douglas Village that the butchered body of Jose Enrique Sanabria was discovered. The gruesome find was made by the farm’s owner Domingo Carrillo around 6 am.

Domingo Carrillo, Farm Owner
“I came here and I dropped the pipes, the PVC pipes, and so I said the guy was asleep. So I made some noise so he could wake and then I saw the blood and I didn’t pay it no mind. Then I told my son because my son was to go back. He just dropped me here and was supposed to go back on the bus and then he went to peep and he saw the guy, my son, and then I watched too and then we left. The police came and they left.”

Keith Swift,
And this guy who saw on the bed and thought was sleeping works for you?

Domingo Carrillo,
“Yes he used to work for me but he doesn’t stay here.”

Sanabria was last seen alive in the company of his co-worker – Honduran national 21 year old Ervin Paz. Pearla Zetina who runs a store in Douglas says she saw both men alive around 5 yesterday evening.

Pearla Zetina, Douglas Resident
“Around 5 o’clock in the evening the boy came to buy a Choco Quickie. The two came on horse but Yuca stayed in the street with the horse and the next one came to buy. I just sold him the Choco Quickie and he gone. I just sold him this and he gone. Only that.”

Keith Swift,
What was your reaction when you heard Yuca had been killed?

Pearla Zetina,
“I feel frightened because he is a good man and he doesn’t trouble nobody.”

But Domingo Carrillo suspects the two men were drinking inside the farmhouse and sometime last night one thing or the other led to murder.

Keith Swift,
You think this was a robbery?

Domingo Carrillo,
“No, it was probably an argument when they were drunk. They were drunk and had an argument and one chopped the next one. That’s it. I believe so.”

Keith Swift,
What was the condition of the house?

Domingo Carrillo,
“I don’t know anything. I just came here and the police know more than me.”

Keith Swift,
You described the house as a mess. Why is that?

Domingo Carrillo,
“Well blood and brains and all kinds of things. They dragged this guy, put him on the bed, and he was chopped up and so imagine the balance.”

Again 21 year old Ervin Paz is wanted for questioning but so far he has not been found. A post mortem on Jose Enrique Sanabria is pending. Not much is known about Sanabria since he lived in Douglas for more than 5 years but didn’t have a family. Police have not recovered the murder weapon which they suspect was a machete. The last murder in Douglas Village was 4 years ago. Sanabria was in his 40’s – and in our next segment we’ll tell you about a much older man who lived in a similar shack who was brutally killed last night.
