Shot Fired in Robbery Attempt at Tile Palace
posted (January 29, 2010)

A gunshot was fired but no one was hurt during a frightening armed robbery attempt this evening in Belize. It happened at the Tile Palace, located at the corner of Vernon Street and Central American Boulevard. At around 5 pm – two young men entered the store and held up the manager Anthony Martinez but he fought back with his bare hands. Martinez told us in an off camera interview that half hour before the robbery, the two robbers entered asking about prices. When they returned they made their intentions known at the outset.

Anthony Martinez, Store Manager
“They pulled out their guns and they said that ghetto bwoy have to eat so this place is getting robbed. So I struggled with one of them and we hollered help because they were trying to push us into the office but when we hollered help they jumped on their bikes and about to go but one of them fired a shot at me in the building. So that is basically what happened.”

Keith Swift,
“So they didn’t get anything?”

Anthony Martinez,
“No they didn’t get anything.”

Keith Swift,
“Why did you decide to fight them?”

Anthony Martinez,
“They were two young boys and I was just trying to overpower him and take away the gun but I never did it.”

Keith Swift,
“Can you describe the experience?”

Anthony Martinez,
“That is a good question. Like surreal, you hear about different people getting robbed and things like that but when it actually hit at home then it is like a surreal moment.”

Again nothing was stolen and no one was hurt. This was the first robbery attempt ever at the Tile Palace.
