Police Constable Detained for Threatening Witness in Teddy Murillo Murder
posted (March 2, 2010)

Last night on 7News you saw the family of Teddy Murillo tearfully lamenting his murder – they said the 21 year old University student and Adventist Church Deacon was killed by a police-man and one that lives close to them. Well, today that constable was detained by police. But he was not accused of murder. Instead, police say they received reports from a relative that the constable threatened a friend of Teddy Murillo. Commissioner Crispin Jeffries confirmed today that the Constable attached to the CIB Branch was detained yesterday evening as soon as the report was made.

This evening, though, the acting Police Press Officer told us that the officer has been released because the person he allegedly threatened has requested that there be no court action. So that’s the end of that, but far from the end of this sad saga. The family of Teddy Murillo believes the constable may have killed their son and brother in a rivalry over girls – basically because they can’t come up with any other reason for such a ruthless killing.

Danalyn Murillo, Mother
“What could have been the situation to cause him five or six or seven bullets. But we sat and as a family and we tried to figure what it could be. One thing we do know is that Ted is a very handsome boy and he gets overwhelmed by the admiration that comes his way and he thinks sometimes he is sidetracked by it. I always do remind him and warn him of this overwhelming responses to admiration. But it seems to me it had to do something to do in that arena there.”

Monica Bodden, Love FM
“Do you think it might have been because of a young lady?”

Shiann Murillo,
“I don’t know, maybe, but he has a lot of girls that like him because he is my brother and he is handsome. So a lot of girls do like him, he always is getting texts from a lot of girls but I am not sure if it is about a girl.”

The family says that they don’t think it is a case of mistaken identity because the officer in question is their neighbor and would be familiar with their son and brother.

The family says they cannot think of any other motive because Teddy Murrillo was not known to hang with any bad crowd and he was away at the University of Belize’s agricultural campus in Cayo for the entire week and only came home on weekends. Evidence gathered so far shows that he was shot at around 1:30 on Waight Street about half a mile from his home. He was shot 5 times and found two and a half hours later face up in a drain. He was last seen at 1:20 am riding home after hanging out with friends in the Princess Park.

Unofficial post mortem results given to us this evening say that all the bullets entered Teddy Murrilo’s body through his back. That is all except a gunshot wound to his hand.
