Education Minister Respects Adventist Mission's Right to Protest
posted (March 4, 2010)

Tomorrow the Adventist Mission in Belize will shut down all 25 of its primary, secondary, and tertiary level schools. It is in protest of crime – specifically last Saturday morning’s murder of 21 year Teddy Murillo who was a deacon in the church. It is a bold statement but is it the right one? That is what we asked Education Minister Patrick Faber today. He says he supports the Adventist Mission.

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
“Managements are allowed certain days and they can give those days to do things that they believe can benefit our children. Now you may argue that closing down schools for the sake of the death of one young person is not big enough, it is not a big enough lesson. I will not agree with you. I would certainly agree that this is a big issue and if that is the way that that particular management wishes to show or to teach its own students a very important lesson as well to the larger society out there a very important lesson then I am very supportive of that.”

The Adventist Church says it has 34,000 members countrywide.
