So there were two murders in the city last night – but the first shooting
happened around six in an alley at the corner of Rocky Road and West Canal.
Over the years, it’s been a chronic crime hotspot – the scene of
literally dozens of shootings or reports of shots fired. But yesterday was another
level. According to reports, the gunman rode up on a beach cruiser bicycle with
a red rag on his face, put down his bike, walked into an alley and opened fire
on three minors.
According to residents, he actually pointed his handgun in the face of a 13
year old boy, but the weapon snapped. The boy then knocked the gun away and
ran, which is when the assailant shot him in the foot. The 11 year old was shot
in the hand and the 17 year old received an undisclosed gunshot injury. None
of the injuries are considered life threatening.
Area residents didn’t want to go on camera but told us that the gunman
– who is believed to be from a rival neighbourhood that has beef with
Rocky Road – didn’t seem to be looking for any particular target
and just opened fire indiscriminately on the minors. As we said, the area is
a known hotspot and police do patrol the area regularly but residents tell us
– the officers were nowhere near when the shooting occurred.
They were also absent later in the evening – after 9:00 when gunshots
rang out one block away on Wagner’s Lane, known as Jump Street. In that
case, there was reportedly an exchange of gunfire but no one was killed.
