And the weekend’s final killing was not a murder, rather it has the appearances
of a case of self defence. Here’s what happened: On Saturday night, at
9:00, San Pedro residents, Samuel Gonzalez and Dimas Gumalliant Silva, were
returning from a hunting trip on Northern Ambergris Caye. They were travelling
in a golf cart and when they got to the Tres Cocos area – which is still
on the north side – they saw a log across the road which forced them to
stop.
As they pulled up, two masked men – one of them armed - came out from
behind the bushes. Samuel Gonzalez had his licensed 12 gauge shotgun on his
lap and pulled the trigger. The shot killed the gunman and his accomplice ran
off. Police arrived at the scene and identified the deceased as 21 year old
Leon Aladana, originally from Camalote. Police also recovered his handgun and
a mask. Aldana has a long criminal record with San Pedro police including drug
trafficking, theft and robbery.
San Pedro Police initially detained Gonzalez but released him pending instructions
from the DPP who will make the ultimate determination on whether it was a justifiable
homicide.
