Can A Single Summit End Violence?
posted (May 5, 2010)
And while the preceding story illustrates the brazen-ness of burglars, the truth is that we are all regularly appalled by what appears to be an increasingly daring crime culture.

Indeed, crime is the single most be-devilling problem of our time  - and one thing's for sure is that there are no easy solutions or fast fixes.

But Mayor Zeianida Moya believes that engaged, productive dialogue is the answers.  She was seized with that solution after attending a conference in Bogotá Colombia three weeks ago.

To understand where she's coming from, you'd have to know that in the mid 90's, Bogotá was considered one of the most dangerous cities on earth with a murder rate of 81.  But by 2007 that murder rate had fallen to 19.

Experts say that country's crime rate was lowered by a participatory strategy that involved various sectors of the community.

And that's what Mayor Moya wants to start in Belize City with the violence prevention summit.

The mayor will present a comprehensive multi sectoral package with 46 proposals to curb violence from prison reform to taking violent programming off cable TV, to compulsory church attendance and bible studies for students, to the death penalty for those convicted of murder.
