Elrington and Israel
posted (May 7, 2010)

Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington was widely criticized when he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Israel in November. Criticized, first, because Israel and Guatemala have a long and close relationship and, secondly, because the counterpart agreement was in Hebrew. But Elrington maintained throughout that the agreement allowing a visa waiver and a technical assistance programme can only help Belize.

And he's kept to that as Elrington today concluded an official visit to Israel where he met with Israeli President, Shimon Peres, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Avigdor Liberman, and other Seniors Officials. According to an official release from the Israeli Embassy in El Salvador, Elrington discussed various issues with his hosts, and met with Israeli business leaders, Israeli high-tech companies and visited the Tel Aviv recycling park.

This is the first official visit of a Belizean Foreign Minister in Israel since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1983. The release also reports that an Israeli Expert in Agriculture has arrived in Belize.
