posted (May 28, 2010)
Sixty five year old American national, James Kaczynski who came to Belize on a Cruise ship a week ago and left a note on the ship saying he will stay in Belize and do volunteer work with children, was fined One thousand dollars in the Number 5 Magistrate's court today, after he was found guilty of failing to produce a visitor's permit. Magistrate Albert Hoare ordered Kaczynski to pay the fine forthwith, or serve six months in prison. Kaczynski told the court he could pay with traveler's cheques and he was kept in police custody until he could cash those cheques. Whether he will be granted a visitor's permit after he has paid the fine will be a matter for the Immigration Department to decide.

Kaczynski came to Belize on May 20th, and when he did not return to the cruise ship and the note was found in his cabin, the Immigration department was informed. Kaczynski was detained on May 25th, when he went to the Immigration office in Punta Gorda to ask for a visitor's permit. He said he had planned to stay in Belize for a period of two years to do voluntary work with the Jesuits for children in Punta Gorda. Kaczynski said he is a retired real estate businessman from Phoenix, Arizona.
