Ride Across Belize
posted (May 28, 2010)
The ride across Belize continued today with stage two which was form Belize City to San Ignacio. It started from in front of the Social Security office in the city with 73 riders - 10 of them women.

7news was there and press officer Miley Garcia told us that the energy level was high:

Miley Garcia, Press Officer - Ride Across Belize
"I think today the riders say the ride should be a little bit easy on the first 50 miles because they felt that the pavement from the north was a little bit course and rough. Its smoother sailing into Belmopan after we get into the hills, that's always a challenge, it's an interesting part of the race, it's a fun part of the rides, it's a interesting part of the ride because that when a bunch of comraderie builds up, people are helping each other to mount those hills and cheering all the others and that's a fun part of the ride."

Jules Vasquez
"Now it takes an extraordinary personal commitment on the part of these individuals, most of them are working people and they take time off from their day jobs and it's a lot of logistics involved. Why did they do it?"

Miley Garcia
"I think first of all it's for the cause. I think that the actions of the staff of Social Security Board in organizing this ride to give to some charitable organization is what inspired these cyclist and I think that once you do it once you want to do it again because you really get the spirit of giving."

The race will wend its way to Dangriga through the rolling hills of the Hummingbird tomorrow and from there it's unto Punta Gorda for the final stage on Sunday.
