Police Minister Singh: "Are You Crazy?"
posted (June 2, 2010)
Today we also heard from Douglas Singh - the new minister of police and public safety. Singh told the press that initially he was apprehensive about taking the job.

Douglas Singh, Minister of Police
"The Prime Minister I think caught me by surprise when he made the suggestion. While I have tremendous respect for the Prime Minister I would not have shared my thought with him at that point in time. I thought, 'Are you crazy?' Then my second thought was, 'Am I crazy?' But I think my third thought won out ultimately at the end of the day and it really crystallizes the reason why I am involve with politics and why I try to do the things that I do. It is really because I love this country and I think being given an opportunity to do something for this country is really the best vote of confidence that the Prime Minister can offer and I thank you for that. In addition to that however I think the icing on the cake was the fact that the Prime Minister committed, he made really an absolute commitment to make a difference. I think he demonstrated today via the presentation really how much he is aware what the issues are and the difficulties are and I think that was key and it is important because I think it allows us to move forward. I addition to that I am very encouraged by the sensitization/consultation exercises that we've done over the last month or so. The organizations we met with are completely onboard I think we see eye to eye."

When asked about a possible shake-up in the police senior command, Singh said he would have to first make a thorough review of the state of affairs before he could comment.
