Rodwell Williams: Still Holding On
posted (June 3, 2010)
Prime Minister Dean Barrow flew to Miami, Florida today to be with his law partner and long-time friend Rodwell Williams. The senior counsel is still in critical but stable condition at Jackson Memorial in Miami tonight. Williams was shot at close range to the midsection at a few minutes after 8:00 as he left his law firm in the downtown area on Monday night. He was rushed to the Belize Health Care Partners Hospital where a team of six doctors including two surgeons, two internal medicine specialists and one gastroenterologist huddled to try and save him. Through three surgeries and a heroic effort, they did, but at a press conference yesterday they told us that in the immediate term, his survival is still in the balance:..

Dr. Emerson Mungia
"Survival depends on how many damage you have of the brain, the kidneys and all the organs affected during the shock status. Remember initially this patient did not have blood pressure, did not have saturation. Even the machine did not detect oxygen in his blood initially before operation."

Dr. Jorge Hidalgo, Intensive Care - Belize Health Care Partners
"Usually those cases have very high mortality rate. Even though he is more stable his condition is still very critical. The time that the brain is not getting enough blood can be a factor; it is very early to say. When he is in a more stable condition they need to access the neurological function and also the organs functions."

So tonight he remains clinging to life in a Miami hospital and his prognosis is very guarded. And what about the police investigation? Well, police have released the two persons who were initially detained and are looking for two others who are known to investigators.
