48 Baymen: Chronicle of A Cancellation Foretold
posted (June 3, 2010)
Last week Wednesday the Ministry Of Local Government held an officious public hearing to review the liquor license granted to the business called 48 Baymen Avenue. At the end of it Local Government minister Gabriel Martinez admitted that he'd have a hard time making a decision since the owner of the establishment Karim Berges is his very good friend and the man who asked for the appeal Caribbean Shores Area Representative Carlos Perdomo is his cabinet colleague. And while Minister Martinez talked it up well, we'd like to think the decision wasn't all that tough: after all, the Prime Minister came out publicly against 48 Baymen Avenue saying he was on the side of the residents who had collected a petition with 100 signatures.

From there, the game was pretty much up but it was made official yesterday when the Ministry of Local Government wrote to Berges informing him that the decision to grant his license has been overturned. Berges told us he has now turned the matter over to his attorney Mike Peyrefitte. Peyrefitte told us they are weighing their options before they decide whether they will go to court.

Berges proposes 48 Baymen Avenue as a conferencing and business center while residents fear that with a liquor license it will turn into one more after hours spot in their already threatened residential neighborhood.
