Saldivar Supports Basketball’s Olympian Effort

There's also a new minister of sports and John Saldivar has immediately gotten the ball rolling - so to speak - with the Belize Basketball Federation. As we've reported, the Federation is taking then Belize national team to the Centro-Basket Tournament to be held in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic in July. It's a big tournament - a qualifier for the Tournament of the Americas which leads to the 2012 Olympics.

And Saldivar knows all about big tournaments. As a young politician in 1998, he lad the effort for the CARICOM national basketball team which won gold in those regional games.

Well a release from his ministry says that he's very much up to speed with this effort as well. Saldivar and senior staff in his ministry met with the executive of the Federation yesterday to discuss the plans.

The release says that The Minister was presented with a plan and budget and was updated on efforts to assemble the team for practice and to contract the services of an internationally accredited Coach for the National Team.

As we understand it the Federation want so bring former UCAL standout and NBA great Marques Johnson as head coach. The release says The Minister has pledged to assist with the Federation's fund-raising effort...
