Belize’s Next Crop Of Singers
posted (June 30, 2010)
If you watched the Next Level Project in November of last year on Channel 7, you may remember Kellie Cadogan. She's the Barbadian vocal instructor who turned the ten next level singers into stage-ready entertainers She's back this year to take part in the Bliss Center's Summer Camp programme and we found her today honing young talent. Here's more.....

You may think it's just another summer program is mostly about singing, but this training is about turning dreams into reality.

Jael August, Singing Apprentice
"I'm happy now that I'm in the summer camp and I am very excited, sometimes I am nervous so I like it so I am in here and I love it."

Emaun Hyde
"You enjoy it?"

Jael August
"Sure, of course."

Emaun Hyde
"What all have you learn so far?"

Jael August
"I learn that we have to stand up straight, your body is an instrument and you never sing from here, you sing from your diaphragm which is down here and if you sing from here it hurts and it affects your throat so that why I learn."

Emaun Hyde
"Do you want to be a professional singer one day?"

Jael August
"Yea."

Azizi Hoy, Singing Apprentice
"I am happy that my parents put me into this because most of the time when I am at home I like to sing to myself and I find that it is a great experience to try to learn to sing better."

Emaun Hyde
"And you learn to sing better so far?"

Azizi Hoy
"Well Ms. Kellie is going to show us more about it. I hope I could sing better."

Emaun Hyde
"And you are enjoying it a lot?"

Azizi Hoy
"Yes it's a great experience for me."

The person who will groom her into that is Kellie Codogan, an experienced singer herself, who is visiting from Barbados. She told us that there's much more to singing, than having vocal talent.

Kellie Codogan, Vocal Trainer
"The most important thing right now is working on vocal technique and the some of the general issue I do find is things like pitches, being able to secure pitches, so we are going to spend time on air training trying to work in more musicianship so vocal technique musicianship stage performance and a bit of drama."

Emaun Hyde
"What are your hope for all your students?"

Kellie Codogan
"Oh my gosh. That they will be able to understand the technique, get a better understanding about what it means, what voice means also to be able to be more confident in their delivery. Everybody that comes here is not necessary aspiring to be a singer but they have a interest in singing and I think more than anything else if it by the end of the program they learn a bit more about themselves about their voices even though they might not be fantastic or great at the performance they have move, it's a process, it's a journey I think that I can't ask for more when I see students coming from a place of not understanding what they are doing to know what they are doing and even those who come knowing and knowing even more so that's everything that they accomplish at the end I am happy with."

Emaun Hyde
"What would you like to tell the general audience about why they should sign up and why they should learn more about signing?"

Kellie Codogan
"Why you should sign up is because this is a fantastic opportunity I believe. I also think that music is taken off in a big way around the world and it is important for people to have training and where is available and the cost of it available at I think is very good and I think that if you are interested or serious about your instrument especially for musicians who are performing it doesn't hurt to come in to get that additional training even at this stage."

Both teacher and pupil gave us a special treat, when they sang for us.

Registration forms are available at the Bliss Institute for the vocal training and in other areas such as photography, videography, piano, dance, and creative writing.
