All The Leadership Ladies, Please Stand Up
posted (July 2, 2010)
The National Women's Commission in partnership with the United Nations Fund for Women will be hosting a 15 week training program as part of its "Women in Politics" project.

You might remember that in March the first part of the programme was held when 39 women - including Mayor Zenaida Moya - graduated from the project.

This second part of the project will cater for 25 Belizean women from all over the country who want to stand for elections in Village Council, Municipal or General Elections.

Executive Director of the National Women's Commission Anne Marie Williams explained:...

Anne Marie Williams, Executive Director of the National Women's Commission
"The Women in politics project as you are aware Monica, is entering its second cohort, and we are encouraging Belizean women from all over this Country to apply to enter the training. If they are seriously contemplating running for elections, and that can be village, town, municipal or general elections. We are not interested in their political history, our interest is in that they have at least the secondary education, and they want to run for elections. Last year as a lot of people will recall we had 53 intake of women and from that 53, 47 graduated. We had a very big graduation ceremony at the Biltmore and we are building on this year using some of the same curses and additional curses. We find it pertinent that women like men should have at least a working knowledge of issues before they become politicians because there are at position where they make leadership decisions and they make policy decisions and its necessary for them to at least have a back drop within which to do that, so we are looking at SIDA, what is SIDA , the convention elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, looking at the CRC, which is Convention of rights of the child, looking also at the Human Rights conventions, what are the implications for all of us, we will take a look at the local government act, the local government policy how to conduct an election campaign, public speaking very important. We will also be exposing these women to women who have successfully ran for elections so that they can share their lived experiences."

Application forms for the -Women in politics" training can be filled in by logging on to the Commission's website and you can find a link to that at 7newsbelize.com. Forms are also available at the Human Development Offices in the districts.
