Benque Got BTL
posted (July 2, 2010)
A utility company opening an office in a town is not news. But when that town is Benque Viejo which doesn't have offices for any utility companies or banks, it is.

It's been a sore point for its mayor Nicholas Ruiz - and he got some relief yesterday when Telemedia opened a customer service center there.

Ruiz - who has a chip on his shoulder the size of Benque Hill -said it's an encouraging start - but only a start:...

Nick Ruiz, Benque Viejo Mayor
"As a Benquenio born and raised here, I have often tried to make sense of the fact that a town of over 8, 500 residences doesn't have, that is not the case with Telemedia now though, doesn't have its own branch offices. Dr. Barnett studies show that since 2000 we have shown a population growth of over 70 % only behind the city of Belmopan and the town of San Pedro. Benque is growing it's not going backwards. We are the only town as I have said that did not have any branch offices, B.W.L ( Belize Water Services Limited) and B.E.L. ( Belize Electricity Limited) still remains the case, and we still don't have a bank but that is another topic for another day, there is a lot of work to be done and sure the councilors know that."

According to Ruiz Benque Viejo Del Carmen has a population of 8700 residents and it has grown the third fastest since 2000, only behind the City of Belmopan and San Pedro - that is, 70% population growth.
