Another Felix Brother Shot
posted (July 16, 2010)
The final item on last night's news was about the shooting at the corner of Faber's Road and Nurse Findley Crescent. It happened at a few minutes to eight as 24 year old Ryan "Cash" Bennett was riding his bicycle not far from home. Bennett is the son of Therese Felix who died in late 2008. Two of his brothers Tyrone and Faron have already been killed and two others have been shot.

So when they attempted to kill Ryan last night, it was one more episode in what seems to be a terminal cycle of violence. Monica Bodden has been on the story since last night and she has this report.

Monica Bodden, Reporting
The bicycle of 25 year old Ryan Felix was in this drain on Faber's road when we arrived on the scene. According to eyewitnesses Felix was lying in the same drain before he was taken away by a pick-up truck to the hospital. As the onlookers stood by gazing everyone was wondering if the young man had indeed died. Heavily armed guards lined the corner of Nurse Findley Crescent and Faber's Road as the crime scene experts came in to process the area. There were a number of empty shells on the scene …and while this one police officer tried to force my cameraman to move backwards… as this group of riders rode past the crime scene these other armed officers seemed as if they couldn't care less.

And despite the array of expended shells on the street, Ryan Felix was only shot once. He survived the attack and today he is listed at the KHMH in a stable condition. He was gunned down one lane away from where he resides about 7:30 last night. At the time of the shooting his brother Terry was at home and heard when the shots rang out. He believes it was no less than 8 gunshots fired at the young man.

Terry Felix
"I heard the gunshots and I look over and I saw the guys run on Faber's Road and by the time I got out there they say that it was Ryan they shoot and already gone to the hospital. One of my friends took me to the hospital and I didn't see him until after a while."

According to Felix's brother, Ryan had just left home when the shooting took place…which was shortly after the power outage. This morning when he spoke to his brother at the hospital - Felix told him he was attacked by two men on a scooter.

Terry Felix
"As far as I know he said he didn't see them. All he said is that he looked back and he saw fire and he drop into the drain thinking that he was going to die."

Felix will be taking a surgery for a broken arm and according to his brother, he may need blood.

Terry Felix
"When I reach there I thought he got multiple shots. The doctor said he only got one shot. The bullet caught him in his left hand, through his chest and exited to his other hand. The doctor did not specify how much blood he needed. He said that Ryan was going into surgery and he might need blood. If any can donate blood they can go to the Blood Bank and donate blood for Ryan Felix."

The Felix brothers are no strangers to the news. Their mother Therese Felix established a group called Mothers Organized for Peace after her first son Tyron Felix was murdered on May 15th 2006. After that she lost her other son Faron Felix to gun violence on December 3rd 2007 and also one of her nephews Curlin Felix.

And even though Therese Felix has passed away, the street violence she once advocated against has not stopped and it has not stopped coming back to her family's door.

Her son told us today all he can do is hope that the violence ceases.

Terry Felix
"I just hope that this thing stops. I don't know when it will stop because this is the 3rd time Ryan got shot. Ryan is trying to live life and as far as I know he is a working person. Most of the young guys that is name Felix are dead and the others are in jail. I don't know if they are trying to kill all of us or whatever."

According to Police - no suspects have been identified and no one is detained.
