Cross Border Cooperation on Dengue

Belize recorded its first dengue hemorrhagic death in mid-July. Since then we've heard nothing from the ministry of health on any concerted assault on the current dengue outbreak - in fact the best that they've done is start airing some dengue awareness ads from - like - the 90's.....

But we did hear some news today from the Mexican government. A technical meeting between senior health officials from Mexico and Belize was held at the Corozal Free Zone administration building on Friday July 30th.

Juan Carlos Azueta, the Quintana Roo Secretary of Health led the Mexican Delegation and Dr. Michael Pitts, Belize's Director of Health Services headed Belize's.

They agreed to two initiatives. The first is to test the effectiveness of insecticides on mosquito larvae. The second is more concrete and it will see Belize's Ministry of Health sending samples of dengue patients for testing at the Public Health Laboratory in Chetumal, Mexico.

It will be done for free and will save time and money as these samples customarily have to be sent to the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre in Trinidad and Tobago.

Like Belize, Dengue is also a significant health problem in Mexico where more than six thousand cases have been reported in 2010 up to mid July. In that country, 16 have died from Dengue Hemorrhagic.

In Early July, Belize's ministry of health reported that the Ministry of Health had received 348 reports of clinical cases of Classical Dengue Fever,....
