PUP: Briceno vs. The Band Of Five
posted (August 27, 2010)
The PUP will have a National Party Council meeting tomorrow at 10:00 am at Independence Hall in Belize City. But what will be decided at that meeting is another issue completely.

All eyes will be on Queen street to see whether party leader John Briceno will pull the trigger and go ahead with the plan to call a national convention for September 26th. - to coincide with the party's 60th. Anniversary.

Now that will put him squarely at odds with the five parliamentarians and the chairman who went to see him at his office yesterday afternoon. They urged him not to go ahead with his plan to call the convention as it would be in violation of the notices required in the party's constitution.

According to Briceno's Chief Of Staff, Stuart Leslie, the party leader assured them that he would not violate the constitution.

Reports from the group of parliamentarians say that Briceno told them the party council would decide whether there will be a September convention.

And he could say that because his camp claims they have the support of 24 of 31 constituency chairmen and chairwomen. Our sources say the figure may be less but by all outward indications, Briceno's group does control a commanding majority going into tomorrow's event.

So what will the band of five which opposes the September convention do? Will they even attend the National Party Council meeting tomorrow? Sources say they will collectively boycott the meeting, but in the delicate, often duplicitous art of PUP power playing - we won't really know who's there until the event starts tomorrow.

Chairman Carolyn Trench Sandiford did not take our calls but confirmed by text that quote, "the chairman chairs the meeting" - which we take to mean that although she appeared with the band of five, she will chair tomorrow's meeting. Still, though, the isolation of the party leader form three of his deputies and the past leader provides a telling commentary on how divided the PUP is at this juncture.

If the unlikely band of five keeps the unity that they appeared with yesterday - Briceno's tenure as leader of the opposition in the House Of Representatives could be in jeopardy - and indeed that is the implicit threat of their unlikely alliance.

But that remains remote, immediately at hand is the decision of tomorrow's National Party Council on whether it will proceed with a snap national convention. We'll be there and let you know about the event and its aftermath on Monday.
