BGYEA’s Big Plans
posted (August 27, 2010)
The Belize Grassroots Youth Empowerment Association - they call themselves "BIG-YEA" - and now they've got their eyes on another big piece of land.

They've already parceled off 1,300 acres and now they came to our studios to say that when they meet on Sunday they will discuss the details of another vast tract of land.

Nigel Petillo, President BGYEA
"We have been doing our research and like we told the people, we found some more land. This land is, we have already been made to believe that land is already in the process of being acquired by the government, that means it will become national land, we have Belizean people who have been expressing interest by coming to our meetings saying that they want piece of land. This is an opportunity for government to say that all these people already says they want a piece, so let us see how we can break these up and form a committee for these people. It's not like I am saying that it is my duty to go and tell the government that the land is available. I am just saying that I know over 3,000 Belizean people right now who say that they want a piece of land and don't have a piece of land, so this is a way to make it available for them."

Jules Vasquez
"So where is this piece of land?"

Nigel Petillo, President BGYEA
"Well I would rather that you come to the meeting, Jules, you, the Belizean people out there, Ministers, anybody out there. I don't want to play the role and say that we will go around and take all the land that are available. No we can't take land, in fact I am not giving you land; this land is not my land, I am just saying to come again, let us express the interest like we have done for the previous land that we work on, and let us tell the government that the land is here and tell us what we can do to get this land Mr. Government, honestly what can we do to get the land for all the people who are out there?"

David Barnett, Vice President - BGYEA
"Everything plain and transparent, that is the key to this thing right now, we are showing people exactly what we are doing, we are not hiding anything. You are asking Nigel where the land is, we are just holding that back, but just come to the meeting. It's just something that we need to do."

That meeting will be held at the Harmonyville site at mile 41 on the western highway at 10:00 am. New members are urged to bring photocopies of their ID's.

But what about the 800 standing members who were selected for one of the one acre tracts at mile 41? They had until the end of August to pay their 800 dollar survey fee. Vice President David Barnett told us that only 50% have paid - which means others can move up the list.

David Barnett, Vice President - BGYEA
"For the people who didn't even show that they were interested, they didn't even call and say that they have 5 children who will start school and things hard and that we really interested. They didn't do that, they didn't do anything like that, so you know what that? That they were just expecting it to be like free, but it's not like that and this is the reality that we have to face. So for those people we are not saying that we will forget them, but we will wait until they are serious. Step aside and the ones that are serious we will move ahead because one thing we don't have is time right now."
