Karl Borders On Belize
posted (September 14, 2010)
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from Belize City to the northern Border at this hour. And If you live in Northern Belize or the Cayes you should be on high alert tonight because Tropical Storm Karl is sitting about 274 miles east of Corozal Town.

The weather system we first told you about last night was upgraded at three this afternoon when a hurricane hunter aircraft clocked winds at 40 miles per hour. Tropical Storm Karl is expected to make landfall somewhere between Cozumel and Chetumal Mexico- around midday tomorrow.

But it is bringing an awful lot of rain and that could mean flooding for northern Belize. This afternoon Monica Bodden spoke to Chief Met Officer Dennis Gonguez about what you should be doing to prepare:….

Dennis Gonguez, Chief Meteorologist
"At 3 pm today tropical storm form just the east if us and at that time it was located near latitude 18.3 north and longitude 84.2 west. That position is about 275 miles east of Corozal Town and it had maximum sustain winds of 40 miles per hour. Well as Karl nears the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize we can expect that conditions will start to deteriorate especially offshore around midnight tonight we should start to see showers increasing and these showers should become more intense as time goes by and tomorrow we should have some heavier showers over the northern sections of the country. Karl is a small compact system, the maximum radius for the winds extend out about 10 miles out to the north east and the south east of the center. So we are not on its present track. We are not expecting to have any impact in terms of winds on our country. We are expecting 3 - 5 inches of rainfall in the northern sections of the country so there is a high possibility of some flooding occurring late Wednesday into Thursday. that possibility does exist with the passage if Karl."

NEMO advises the pubic to stay tune to their local radio and television stations for further advisories - as they continue to monitor Tropical Storm Karl.

4 to 6 inches of rainfall is expected. People along the coast and on the Cayes are encouraged to evacuate early, once NEMO declares a hurricane warning phase.

The NEMO hotline number is 636. Please contact your NEMO District Coordinator for local information.
