Teenager Drowns in Griga
posted (September 17, 2010)
A teenager drowned yesterday morning in Dangriga. It happened between 10:00 and 10:30 when 15 year old David Mejia, a Honduran National who reportedly arrived in the country only two weeks ago, drowned in the North Stann Creek River at the Second New Site Area in Dangriga Town.

Reports are that Mejia's step father crossed the river while he stayed on the other side with his mother who was washing. A short while later Mejia tried to cross the river but when his stepfather saw him he was drowning and attempted to rescue him.

Mejia's family reports that it was difficult to hold on to him for long because his step father was tired and the boy slipped out of his grip.

A short while later Mejia's body was retrieved from the water. The area where Mejia was swimming is reported to be deep it is used by construction companies as a sand pit. Reports are that this isn't the first drowning to take place in that area - another occurred as recently as two years ago….
