High School Gets Laptops
posted (September 22, 2010)
Last September the Belize City Council and Serving Saints International signed an agreement for the organization to adopt the then St Michael's College now Maud Williams High. The school was selected based on the need for resources to make education easier through books, supplies and help with tuition. Today to make good on that commitment, Serving Saints joined hands today with New World Villages, donated 20 laptops to the school.

Serving Saints International today made a donation of 20 laptops to Maud Williams High. This gesture was inspired by a young boy who Jackie Collins encountered in the city:

Jackie Collins: Serving Saints International
"Well I was visiting the Southside of Belize about 2 years ago and a little ran out to me with some tennis shoes that were old and rugged that should have actually be thrown in the trash can and he was excited because now he get to wear these tennis shoes. When I got back to the United States my heart was overwhelm because I look at the children in the United States and how bless they are. I ask myself what can I do to help so I got in touch with the mayor and I ask her what causes the poverty and she says lack of education. So what we committed to do is help eradicate poverty by committing ourselves to Maud Williams High School, we made a commitment last year to install computers, I met Mal, he saw us online, he call me - what can we do? He proposition and said if your organization donate 10 computers we would donate computers. So we are here today to follow thru with that commitment we made a year ago today."

Principal Cruzita Castillo told us that the fulfillment of that promise couldn't come at a better time as the laptops will be put to good use by the students:

Cruzita Castillo-Principal Maud Williams
"Well they are just excited already just seeing them. I think they are eagerly waiting to get into the lab to get their fingers on them. First we only had 10 computers in here and it was not enough for the amount of students. we have a maximum of 25 students coming into the lab, so they had to pair off to use the computer, but now we have 20 laptops and we have 10 computers so with this I guess that it will bring out the efficiency to run the program and our students will definitely have no excuse what so ever to get their assignments done or the day to day activities that the program calls for. So I think that they will be truly be motivated by this huge donation that Serving Saints have given to our school."

The students echoed the sentiments of their principal:

Student
"It means a lot, it's good to do you work and stuff and it's enjoyable to be on."

Student
"It's going to be efficient for the students of Maud Williams because we won't have to be going to the library more, we could stay right here and do all our home works and stuffs. For the 4th formers the principal that they will get more things done and more faster."

Student
"These computer means a lot because it comes in handy for us especially 4th form."

The students were moved by the contribution, and the feeling was mutual:

Mal Moran: New World Villages
"One of the commitment that she had made to this school I thought that it would be a great partnership and in fact it has turn out to be a really good partnership."

In a few weeks Serving Saints International will start a feeding programme to provide healthy food for needy students at the school.
