Penta Brings Out Artistic Talent In Children
posted (September 23, 2010)
Today over a hundred students of both Primary and Secondary schools gathered at the Image Factory to see their art displayed. But it's not just art for art's sake, it is a competition. The exhibition which is titled "Penta Paint Up Di Place 2010" is in its third year saw the submission of nearly two hundred entries.

The competition, which started some months ago culminated today when the students get to see their art displayed. Among them is a brother and sister team that walked away with the grand prize:

Oscar & Noemi Flores: St. Joseph's Primary
"Well we like painting so the teacher encourages us to enter competition to show our skills to people so I guess the teachers and the people around us encourage us to join the competition."

Andrea Polanco
"So can you tell us more about the piece that you did here?"

Oscar & Noemi Flores: St. Joseph's Primary
"Well I chose the animals because it is our national animals and sites; the blue hole and black orchid and everything else. That is why I chose the animals."

Andrea Polanco
"So why did you two decide to come together and work on this piece?"

Oscar & Noemi Flores: St. Joseph's Primary
"Well he can draw very good; I can paint good and so they told us that we can join it together and maybe it might win or anything so I guess that people encourage us to join in together and we won so I guess it's good."

Andrea Polanco
"Did you expect to win this competition?"

Oscar Flores: St. Joseph's Primary
"No miss."

Andrea Polanco
"So how are you feeling right now that you found out that you are the big winner of this prize."

Noemi Flores: St. Joseph's Primary
"Well I was surprise and I feel very proud of winning it because sometimes not everyone gets to have the prvilage."

Andrea Polanco
"You want to send a message to other students to get involve in this creative project?"

Oscar Flores: St. Joseph's Primary
"I want to encourage all the children in primary and high school to join the Penta competition next year and keep out of trouble."

And while the competition did keep Oscar and Noemi busy, it was the combined effort s of the school that made it all possible. Principal Glorisella Torres told us what the win means for St Joseph's Primary:

Andrea Polanco
"Principal how are you feeling today knowing that two of your students won this big competition?"

Glorisella Torres, Principal St. Joseph School
"I feel awesome in terms that we can see progress in the art field and i am happy for the art teacher who has been with us over the 3 years and we have seen that our club, we have a total of 50 members in the club after classes and we are very excited and we are looking for a good future in art for our school."

And that is exactly what this competition makes possible, growing the talents of students from year to year:

Andrea Polanco
"Do you see maybe a great improvement in terms of the quality of work being put forward compare to maybe the first year since it started?"

Carlo Habet: Marketing Manager- Brothers Habet
"Actually yes I do. One thing that really cool is that we are seeing more paintings. The first year it's a lot of drawings; pencils, markers there is all kinds of stuff and that's fine because we didn't limit it, we told them you can do what you want; charcoal; whatever you want to do whatever style is fine. But I find that this year there is painting and that's great, the work is really good, I mean its impressive from the kids as well as high schoolers, they can really paint."

And paint they can because for Joanna Huang who placed among the top students in last year's competition, she's back again this year:

Joanna Huang-Pallotti High School
"This year because I am happy that I win and I come for my award."

Andrea Polanco
"So can you tell me a little bit more about the piece that you did?"

Joanna Huang-Pallotti High School
"I did Belize nature like flowers. I really like Belizean flower; they have plenty of flowers in Belize and I think Belize is as beautiful as those flowers."

Andrea Polanco
"Are you planning to enter the competition again next year?"

Joanna Huang-Pallotti High School
"Yes definitely I will come next year and i will get better."

Andrea Polanco
"So you want to encourage other students to get involved in this competition?"

Joanna Huang-Pallotti High School
"Yes of course I will always encourage my friends from my school because we don't have much Pallotti high school students here. I will try encourage them, they also can do as good as me."

The students with the winning art received a five hundred dollars cash prize and the opportunity having their school painted with Penta Paint. Out of the two hundred entries received forty pieces will be on exhibition for a month at the Image Factory. Of those forty, twelve will be used for a full-color calendar. The pieces which will be exhibited around the country in the coming weeks will eventually be auctioned off.
