Mercury Falling But Still Deadly In Macal
posted (October 4, 2010)
The ministry of health this evening issued a disturbing release about mercury levels in the Macal river. The public advisory deal specifically with Bay Snook from the Macal.

It says that in June, mercury levels in Bay Snook on the Macal were recorded at three times the recommended limit. And while that is concerning, the level is down from the December 2009 reading.

The advisory cautions that the public is still at risk for mercury poisoning if they consume more than about half a pound of fish for every 125 pounds of body weight. Consuming more than that can result in mercury poisoning. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and small children are most at risk.

The testing was mandated as part of the supreme curt ruling on the Chailillo Dam environmental compliance plan.
