Alleged Drug Dealer Diego Witz Gets Off
posted (October 6, 2010)
It made huge news in May when sharp police work detected what officers thought to be a broad daylight drug deal in progress in the parking lot of the Texaco gas station on the northern highway. The cars parked in front of the Belize Bank and Police on surveillance saw parcels of apparent cocaine handed over as cash was passed in exchange. The anti-drug unit caught the man with the supposed drugs on the northern highway - while another police vehicle crashed as it was chasing the car with the cash as it headed for the Western Highway.

Diego Witz was the man caught with 5 parcels, 4.3 kilos of suspected cocaine. But today in court, the charge of drug trafficking was dismissed from the 48 year old Punta Gorda businessman.

And that's because when tested the substance was found to be neither cocaine nor heroin. Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser dismissed the charge on a directive from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.

But although Witz was freed of the charge he was taken to prison because he was on parole and his parole was revoked after he was charged with drug trafficking. Witz was serving a 6 year sentence and he was granted parole in a prisoner exchange between Belize and Mexico.
