These Burglars Are So Busted!
posted (October 19, 2010)
If you live in Belize City and you passed the much trafficked Belcan roundabout this morning - you would have seen a small car, mashed up against the railing for the sidewalk. But it wasn't an act of drunk or reckless driving - it was a sort of rough-handed citizen's arrest. The occupants of the car that was smashed into the railing were carrying the proceeds of a burglary - multiple burglaries in fact, all visited on the same house.

But Monica Bodden found out how they were caught:….

Monica Bodden, Reporting
This was what the scene looked like when we arrived. A green Mazda car smashed into the railing of the Belcan roundabout. It wasn't any ordinary accident - in fact - it was intentionally slammed into the railing by this silver minivan. The car that had 3 alleged robbers inside was chased by this van all the way from Ladyville. It was indeed a high powered chase - and after 12 miles of tailing the car -it ended at the Belcan roundabout.

The culprits threw a stone out the window of the Mazda and broke the windshield of the van. That was when the van rammed into them.

Belize City police were already radioed in by the Ladyville officers and were quickly on the scene. The trio that was seated inside the car was taken away by police.

What makes the story even more interesting is that the guys had burglarized the home of Emil Young who is away on business - not once - nor twice, but 3 times in one night.

Sherman Estell - Caretaker
"Yesterday evening around 7 o'clock I got a phone call from a friend of mine, both of us are somewhat in charge of the house and she asks me if I could please come over because the neighbor went home and found that the house was broken into that we were supposed to be taken care of. We went over there and found out that they have ripped off the burglar bar window from the back of the house and they opened the front door and they had all the stuff packed in boxes and bags in the middle of the house including a racer bike. So we secured the house and call the police, they police they came and they look around and said that that was the best that they could do and that we could come to the station to make a complain in the morning."

Well the morning didn't make it fast enough - as this brazen set of thieves made their way back to the house. According to Estell - he left someone last night to look after the house. But that didn't stop the trio from entering - to pick up what they - packed up.

"About 2 o' clock in the night I got a phone call from the neighbor saying that I should come over quickly because he heard lots of noise and he believe the thieves came back to make good whatever they were doing. So I went over there only to find out that they enter the house again whilst the person was in there and the stuff were all scattered and the bicycle was nowhere in sight. He said he fell asleep, he said he stay up about 12 and he fell asleep and when he heard some noise he got up and when he flip on the light the thieves ran through the front door, most of the stuff that he was suppose to be watching had already gone."

The police showed up once more to the residence and searched the area. After they left - Estell left 2 more men along with the other to watch the house.

Sherman Estell - Caretaker
"Sometime between 4 and 5 o' clock they all call me telling me that they intercepted a car that was coming down the same street where the house is and they had the racer bike at the back of the car. They were coming down the street to make good their pick up which they had put over the fence not knowing that we had already put the stuff back in the fence inside the yard and in the house."

The 3 men jumped in their van and ensued in a high-speed chase down the Northern Highway.

Sherman Estell - Caretaker
"They somehow got the racer bike and a chase ensued which ended up in Belize with an accident. The police got all 3 guys and they have the bicycle and I don't know what else is missing from out of the house because I wasn't there before they burglarize the house."

Up to when last we checked, the persons who were in the car had not yet been arraigned in court.
