Chris Galvez Scholarship
posted (November 9, 2010)
He was killed almost a year ago, but today the name of Christopher Galvez lives on. The Belize Kids First Organization through Belizeans for Justice awarded Dominique Noralez, a first year St Catherine's Student with the Christopher Galvez Educational Scholarship Award. For Yolanda Schakron, today marks a bittersweet moment for her family but his memory will live on:

Yolanda Schakron, Aunt of Chris Galvez
"Today is Christopher's birthday, he would have been 24 years old today, so it's a hard day but I am happy that we have started this scholarship in his name. I know that is what Chris would have wanted because he loves to help people who were less fortunate than him."

Andrea Polanco
"So with regards to this scholarship. what is the exact value and does it cover the 4 years of high school?"

Yolanda Schakron, Aunt of Chris Galvez
"It's going to be the 4 years and it will cost about $1,500.00 per year with books and everything. A full scholarship."

Dominique Noralez
"I would like to be a doctor, study science and stuff."

Andrea Polanco
"So were you surprise when you receive this scholarship?"

Dominique Noralez
"Very surprise yes."

Andrea Polanco
"You say you want to be a doctor. This scholarship will enable you to pursue that dream?"

Dominique Noralez
"Yes it will help me very much. I was already worrying about how my mom will get the funds to pay. So now I don't have to worry, just study and pass."

Therese Nauze
"It's a big help because I have a 17 year old in 4th form at EP Yorke and it was very difficult for me to find the funding for her to go St. Catherine's and that's the school she wanted to go. So it's a great help. Without Mrs. Schakron I don't know how I was going to do it. Thanks again."

Andrea Polanco
"I heard you mention earlier that several persons applied for this scholarship. What was the deciding factor for Dominique Noralez?"

Anne Palacio Kids First Organization
"Well it was her interview because they all had to do interviews, it's not only a process where you apply and you can go back, she came in and just her sitting down and saying 'I want this scholarship because I want to become a doctor and there is nowhere else a scholar could become a doctor if I don't get this scholarship because my parents can't afford it' and she was very willing, she was someone that you could see in her that she had the desire even though she was very calm and shy at first; you could see that she had the desire of wanting to become a doctor. Most of them came in and they were very nonchalant, they were like oh yes I want the scholarship and my mom brought me up here or my dad brought me up here. But she was more focused on saying this is what I want and if you give it to me I promise that I will make sure that it's something where I would be proud of, the organization would be proud of and Christopher's name would be one that would live on."

For Noralez to maintain her scholarship she is required to maintain good grades and perform community service.
