posted (November 11, 2010)
Tonight the family of 8 year old Kean Vasquez is in deep shock and profound grief - after the child was knocked down and killed last night on the highway near his home in Georgeville Village.

The child was returning from practice for Harvest - a religious observance when a driver lost control of her vehicle and ran him over.

Monica Bodden went west today and spoke with the family:….

The shattered glass on the highway marks the spot where 8 year old Kean Vasquez was knocked down and killed around 6:30 yesterday evening in the Village of Georgeville.

Carmela Cain - Grandmother
"I thought it was an animal that get hit, I didn't know it was my grandson that get hit because that bang was so hard, when we heard the bang we get out of the church and ran outside downstairs and there I saw Sheraine bring Keane and she says 'hurry hurry it is Kean that get knock down, let's go hurry, put him in the car and lets go take him to the hospital' because he was bleeding a lot and Sheraine and Marigold and Albert Tillet who drove the car took him to the Loma Luz Hospital."

Monica Bodden
"He was still alive according to when he got there and they he died a couple of minutes after."

The little boy who was at harvest rehearsal with his grandmother - had just finished - and without her knowing - slipped away - to head over to the football field.

Myra Samos - was driving the red Isuzu Rodeo that knocked down little Kean.

Samos who was heading in the direction of San Ignacio Town - told police that while reaching the football field in Georgeville, the little boy ran across the highway - causing her to hit him and lose control of her vehicle and overturned. But according to one witness - who asked to remain off camera - things didn't exactly happen that way.

She told us she was sitting inside the church by the window and saw everything.

Voice of Witness
"He walk across the road to the football because the church is right in front of the football field, he walk across and while standing on the side of the football on the side of the road the vehicle coming from Belmopan side speeding, overtaking another vehicle and swirl in and knock the little off the side. I didn't see the little boy until they pick him up, I thought that her tire burst first because you hear the rumbling and I thought that the tire burst because it sounded like when you are driving with flat tire but when I conscious its the little boy who was under the wheel, I was in the church and I say a little bad word and ran out of church and the young man and I took him to the hospital."

The family strongly believes that Samos was speeding through the village.

According to other witnesses, she jumped a speed bump that is located just a couple yards away from where the eight year old boy was hit.

Carmela Cain - Grandmother
"Someone told me that she jump the speed bump, I don't know, I was walking up to church after that and a young man came to me and says 'Ms. Carmela, that lady jump the bump and she was speeding and that vehicle flip, it was going to Cayo and it turn back like in the direction to Belize City'."

Monica Bodden
"From this, your own personal investigation, talking to people on the scene and around, anyone told you that this woman was speeding?"

Carmela Cain - Grandmother
"Well with the way how it flip over 3 times I would say its speeding because she just left a speed bump and reach out by the Pentecostal Church and flip over 3 times so I would say that it is speed."

Monica Bodden
"Now from what you were seeing, was this vehicle speeding?"

Witness
"Yes it was speeding."

Today for his mother - coming to terms with the death of her 8 year old son is still hard.

Rebecca Vasquez - Mother
"It's hard right now because I still can't believe my baby is dead yet. Because I just talk to him yesterday and less than an hour he is dead. Yesterday when he came from school he told me mommy I already did my home work just please check it and sign it for me, I told him that I have check and it have 2 wrong, he say that he will erase it and do it over, he told me to sign it and I am going with my friends to play marble. My cousin that live in the same yard with us goes to the same church, she took him in her car to the church to practice for the harvest."

Carmela Cain - Grandmother
"All we want is justice, all we want is the family that do this to Kean come and sympathize with us, we need justice for something like this."

For this family - coping with the loss of their loved one is almost unbearable.

Carmela Cain - Grandmother
"He will be going to miss by the family and we love him no matter he went away and leave us but we love him because he is a loving child, a child that love football and that they were going to kick ball on the football field. He love that sport so much and he went there where it all happen."

Eight year old Kean Vasquez was a Standard one student of St Hilda's Primary School in Georgeville. He was getting prepared for the upcoming harvest that is supposed to be held on Sunday at the Georgeville Pentecostal Church. Driver MYRA SAMOS has been served with a notice of intended prosecution…
